Saluting three volunteers

Michelle Dame, Monifa Ellington and Will Hopkins are three of the many volunteers who lead corporate efforts across the Tri-County. The good things Trident United Way does in our community happen because of these volunteers and so many others. Here now, some perspective on why they volunteer and what they bring to our community.

MICHELLE: What does it mean to you to volunteer and why TUW?

Helping others is what I feel like I was born to do. My parents and grandparents always taught us to be kind to others, help when we can and treat everyone like family. TUW is the obvious choice to be able to reach multiple organizations and create a big impact. The TUW team have become our family at Truist and we appreciate all they do for us. They constantly keep us in mind for any need an organization might have and we are always there ready to help whenever we can!

MONIFA: What advice can you give to others about getting involved in the community either as an individual or with their workplace?

Don’t hesitate and don’t overthink it - just do it. There are so many people in our community that aren’t looking for a hand-out. They’re prideful people that sometimes, no matter how hard or how much they work, still need a little help. If you’re able to provide that assistance, why wouldn’t you? We never know if one day the shoe may be on the other foot.

WILL: What has been your most memorable volunteer experience so far?

I have had many memorable volunteering experiences. The Young Philanthropist Society’s Sip and Serve Backpack/School Supply drive is incredible. I know what it is like to need and want a new backpack as a kid and the school supplies that fill that bag, so that always holds a special place.

The other would probably be Bingo with Our Lady of Mercy. I think back to my maternal grandmother and her sisters and their love of bingo and that makes that event very special.  Also, any opportunity to serve at One80 Place. As a veteran, helping veterans that are in need is important. Helping the most vulnerable of our society and those that have served our society are right in line with the spirit and meaning of TUW.
