South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs
The South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs helps veterans, service members and their families access federal and state benefits (like healthcare, education, employment), resource navigation, advocacy and support and special programs that offer recognition for military-supportive academic institutions and provides peer mentorship through the Palmetto Pathfinder Program.
Employment & Career Training
Operation Palmetto Employment, launched by former Gov. Nikki Haley and supported by the S.C. National Guard and the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce, is a commitment to helping our service members, family members and veterans find meaningful civilian careers.
SC Works Veterans Services has dedicated staff, many of whom are veterans or service members themselves, specifically trained to assist military jobseekers find meaningful civilian employment. Serving all branches and family members.
Palmetto Goodwill’s Palmetto Warrior Connection (PWC)
Palmetto Goodwill’s Palmetto Warrior Connection (PWC) offers dedicated guidance, wraparound support and career coaching to develop a person-centered employment plan, helping you set specific goals and choose a sustainable career path that utilizes your existing military skills. PWC is committed to helping the entire family succeed by offering training and resources to spouses and dependents.
Food Resources
SC211.org helps provide nearby locations for emergency food boxes or free community meals.
Soldiers’ Angels Critical food assistance for low-income service members and veterans through monthly food distributions, VA Canteen Gift Cards and non-perishable box lunches.
Project Street Outreach offers critical food assistance for service members, veterans and their immediate family members facing food insecurity.
Mental Health
The Veterans Crisis Line offers free, 24/7, confidential support for Veterans, Service members, and their loved ones, regardless of VA enrollment. Connect instantly by dialing 988 then pressing 1, texting 838255 or chatting online at VeteransCrisisLine.net/Chat to speak with trained, caring responders.
Charleston Vet Center offers confidential help for Veterans, service members, and their families at no cost in a non-medical setting. Services include counseling for needs such as depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the psychological effects of military sexual trauma (MST). We can also connect you with more support in VA and your community.
Ralph H. Johnson Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center
Ralph H. Johnson Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center aims to address Veterans’ needs from the moment they transition out of the military through their reintegration into civilian life and beyond. Nothing is more important to VA than supporting the health of the nation’s Veterans and their families. Overall health includes mental well-being, which VA supports with timely access to high-quality, evidence-based mental health care.
Transportation
The Disabled American Veterans (DAV)
The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) provides free van rides to and from Charleston VA Medical Center to Veterans who don’t have other transportation options. Find out how to schedule a DAV van ride. Call (843) 789-6555 for more information. Please note that DAV vans can only provide rides to ambulatory passengers (passengers who are able to move around without the driver’s help).
Other Veteran-specific transportation services, including buses, shuttles and wheelchair-accessible transport, are available to patients. Please contact the Ralph H Johnson VAMC Transportation office at (843) 789-6555 directly to schedule a ride.
