NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C.– Trident United Way has been awarded Nonprofit of the Year by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce as part of the 2026 Honors Awards, recognizing organizations, businesses and individuals that are helping shape the future of the region through meaningful community impact.
For more than 80 years, Trident United Way has served Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties, responding to the region’s most pressing challenges. This recognition reflects both that long-standing commitment and a transformative new chapter focused on a bold community goal to uplift 15,000 families out of poverty by 2035.
38% of Tri-County families fall below the ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) threshold, households working and contributing to the local economy but still struggling to afford basic needs as the cost of living continues to rise.
“Every day, our Family Coaches are walking alongside hardworking households who are doing everything right and still finding it hard to get ahead,” said DJ Hampton, president and CEO of Trident United Way. “They are working, raising children and contributing to our community, but one unexpected expense can set them back. Our role is to make sure they are not navigating that alone.”
“This work is carried by our entire community, our staff, our board, our donors, our volunteers, our nonprofit partners and employers. And together, we bring those pieces into alignment so families can access support in a way that truly works and leads to real progress.”
Trident United Way’s approach centers on coordinated support and long-term solutions. The organization connects families to financial coaching, resources and opportunities that help them move from surviving to stable. This work unites nonprofits, employers and community leaders to align efforts, close gaps and address challenges that no single organization can solve alone.
Kevin T. Sheilley, president and CEO of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, said the award reflects Trident United Way’s role in strengthening both families and the regional workforce.
“Trident United Way stands out because they are not working in isolation,” said Sheilley. “They are bringing together employers, nonprofits and community partners around a clear goal. That kind of alignment is what drives real change. It strengthens our workforce, supports local businesses and helps ensure this region continues to grow in a way that works for everyone.”
Trident United Way is one of several honorees that will be recognized at The Honors on April 23 at The Grand at 81 Mary in Charleston. The ceremony begins at 6:00 p.m.
