Myrna and Edgar's Success Story

Myrna Batiz is a loving mother of three who has hopes and dreams for each of her children.

Myrna and her youngest child, Edgar, participated in the Family Literacy Program (FLP) offered through Trident United Way.  FLP provides parents with the tools to prepare their children for school, manage discipline issues and promote literacy development through time spent playing and learning together.

“Myrna comes every month with her children and it has been very good for her,” said Martha Gomez, a patient navigator for FLP.

Because of the FLP, Edgar, 5, is now able to read, identify colors and shapes, and communicate with his mother. Myrna says that he is ready to enter kindergarten and succeed in school.

Through TUW’s partnership with MUSC Children’s Care, which operates the FLP, the health needs of families are being met and Lowcountry children are starting school prepared to learn.
