By Devon Wade, Director of Advocacy and Public Relations
Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to attend the United Way Worldwide Advocacy Forum in Washington, DC, alongside my TUW colleague Joey Current. We joined over 400 United Way professionals from all 50 states and Puerto Rico to share strategies, build connections and focus on how we can strengthen our communities.
One of the most valuable parts of the experience was working closely with our fellow South Carolina United Ways. Coming together as a statewide team always deepens our conversations, sharpens our advocacy efforts and reminds me of the power of collaboration.
I was also honored to speak during a breakout session at the conference about how Trident United Way has utilized local advocacy efforts to expand the impactful work we’re leading in our community. Sharing our stories, and learning from others doing similar work across the country, was both energizing and inspiring.
We closed the week on Capitol Hill, meeting with the offices of Representatives Jim Clyburn and Nancy Mace, and Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott. We talked about ALICE, the 211 Helpline and many of the local programs making a difference in the Tri-County. We also joined our peers in advocating for the HELP Act to secure stronger federal support for 211 services.
It was an honor to represent Trident United Way and our Tri-County community on Capitol Hill. We’re grateful to United Way Worldwide for this experience, which reaffirmed how advocacy and public policy can strengthen our mission and impact in the Tri-County community.
