MyFreeTaxes helps people file their federal and state taxes for free while getting the assistance they need. United Way provides MyFreeTaxes in partnership with the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to help filers prepare their federal and state tax returns on their own or connect them to a certified volunteer who can prepare them for free.
MyFreeTaxes helps people who earn $89,000 or less file their own taxes online for free. People who earn less that $69,000 can have their taxes prepared for them.
Charleston Area Urban League Free VITA Tax Help Locations
Tri-County residents can file accurate tax returns at no cost through the Charleston Area Urban League’s IRS-certified VITA program.
VITA sites offer free tax help to people who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns, including:
- People who generally make $67,000 or less
- Persons with disabilities; and
- Limited English-speaking taxpayers
Free local assistance helps individuals and families maximize eligible refunds, avoid costly errors, and file on time at trusted locations throughout the 2026 tax season.
Items needed for tax preparation
- Last year’s tax return
- Any income information (W-2, 1099- G Unemployment, 1099-MISC, other 1099s & 1098 forms)
- A government-issued ID
- Social Security Card
- Deduction and credit information
- Healthcare coverage information (Form 1095-A, 1095-B, 1095-C, as applicable)
- Any written correspondence from the IRS
