This survey will help to guide the direction of our efforts to be sure we are able to meet the needs of our community and have the greatest impact.

FoodShare Berkeley County Increases Online Access to Reduce Food Insecurity

In January FoodShare Berkeley County received approval from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service to accept SNAP online for purchases of fruits and vegetables sold through its Fresh Food Box program.

Launched in the summer of 2023, FoodShare Berkeley County (powered by Trident United Way) is a member of a state-wide network of FoodShare South Carolina partners operating hubs and distributing Fresh Food Boxes to local communities. FoodShare SC is one of a small number of community-based organizations in the United States selected to participate in the SNAP online purchasing program.

Many communities in South Carolina do not have access or financial resources to eat fresh, healthy foods on a daily basis. Barriers to healthy foods can include geographic location, age, income and the availability of reliable transportation. Without options for fresh, healthy foods, numerous health risks can arise.

By accepting SNAP/EBT benefits, FoodShare SC ensures that recipients can routinely access healthy and affordable food. A 20-pound box, packed with up to 11 varieties of fruits and produce can be purchased for $5 when using SNAP/EBT instead of the base price of $20.

Trident United Way Volunteers Read to
106 Elementary School Classrooms in One Day

Trident United Way's 7th Annual Read Across America Day on March 1st hosted 65 volunteers who read to 106 classrooms in 13 Tri-County elementary schools in just one day.

At Trident United Way we know that reading aloud to students can help them develop a love of reading and improve their literacy skills.

When parents, community members, and professionals are able to unite to positively influence children’s social and emotional needs, they will have maximum impact on the development of strong brains.

TUW and SC Thrive Offer Free Tax Assistance
in the Tri-County

Trident United Way and SC Thrive’s tax filing portal is now open, offering free services to Tri-County residents with an adjusted gross household income of $79,000 or less.

This year, in addition to online self-service filing, there will be a number of Tax Clinics across the Tri-County. Qualified SC residents can make an appointment with a trained Tax Counselor to get in-person help with filing. Sites can easily be located by calling Trident United Way’s 211 Helpline (dial 211) and asking for the location nearest you.

Last year in the Tri-County, Trident United Way and SC Thrive helped file nearly 2,200 tax returns, which returned over $1.9 million in estimated value back to households across our community. Filing taxes early puts you at the front of the line for a refund. The longer you wait to file, the longer the wait for a refund.
