STAFF SPOTLIGHT : MEET SHAKELIA

Shakelia LeBlanc,
Prosperity Center Coordinator

“My personal beliefs align so much with the mission of Trident United Way. Specifically working in the centers, we acknowledge that every situation is different but we work hard to share resources with our clients while showing them how to sustain on their own.”

In one sentence, describe what you do at Trident United Way (TUW).
I assist in the coordination of services that help our clients become financially stable.

Tell us about your professional background.
I have always been deliberate about being involved in my community. I started volunteering on my own in high school and haven’t looked back since.  It’s truly important to me, and I have a passion for helping others. I believe my desire to serve others, more than anything else I’ve done qualifies me for my current position.

Outside of work, how are you involved in the Tri-County community?
I moved here a few years ago from Florida. Since living here I have been a volunteer at My Sister’s House and Reading Partners. Currently, I am a mentor with a teen-girls’ group called Beautiful Shades. I spend a lot of time with my church family and I enjoy going to the waterfront park to relax and take time away from the everyday hustle and bustle.

How does your work contribute to TUW’s work to advance the common good and transform our community?
I think the work we do at the Prosperity Centers demonstrates the essence of TUW’s goal to change our community. We have the ability to help transform lives through shared resources and by equipping the folks in our community with the tools they need to become financially stable. This can be done by helping a grandmother who’s raising her 3 grandchildren apply for SNAP or by helping a First Time Home buyer purchase their first home.

What will you be working on in the next six months?
In the next 6 months, we will be working on several new things at the centers. You will be seeing a lot more community and outreach focused events coming from the Prosperity Centers.

What are three adjectives that describe how you work?
Compassionate. Creative. Thorough.

What is a song or quote that you live by? Why is it meaningful to you?
I love the quote: “God gave us two ears and one mouth, so we should listen twice as much as we talk.” I think that in this era, we are so used to everyone having an opinion that everyone is talking and no one is listening. I’m of the mind, that instead of listening to respond we should listen to understand.

Tell us about one of your hobbies or talents.
I really enjoy singing! Although, I’m not very good and I make-up my own words. I also love cooking, historical period dramas, traveling, and learning about other cultures.
