Organizing 250 companies and non-profit organizations and 5,100 participants
at nearly 100 different locations for a day of volunteering is a mammoth
organizational undertaking.
For its effort,
Trident United Way’s Day of Caring has been honored by the Project
Management Institute as Lowcountry Project of the Year.
Chapter President
R. Brandon Manus, who heads the Project Management Office at South
Carolina Federal Credit Union, commended Trident United Way for its
“ability to coordinate and deliver such a large network of volunteers
and organizations in the spirit of helping others.”
The 2007 Day of
Caring, held Sept. 11, delivered approximately $1 million of labor
and supplies to nearly 150 non-profits throughout Berkeley, Charleston
and Dorchester Counties.
At the Boys & Girls Club on Mary Street in Charleston, Best Buy
staff installed a computer lab on Day of Caring. They were so energized
by the project that they return regularly to maintain the computers
and mentor the kids. Best Buy also donates $1,000 to Boys & Girls
Club for every 40 hours the staff volunteers.
The Project of
the Year award was accepted by Sally Burnett, Trident United Way’s
volunteer coordinator and the organizer of Day of Caring. Trident
United Way’s Day of Caring is the largest Day of Caring in the nation,
per capita.
