Trident United Way's HUD-certified Housing Counselor has helped thousands of Lowcountry residents get reverse mortgages, avoid foreclosure and overcome housing discrimination.

In the last six months, TUW's Housing Counselor has:

• helped 121 people with mortgage delinquency issues, only five of them were foreclosed.
• helped 166 people obtain reverse mortgages.
• helped 99 people with rental issues
• helped 59 people seeking emergency shelter.

Facts about the need:

• More seniors are seeking reverse mortgages in order to pay off their existing mortgage than ever before.
• The number of families with above-average income seeking housing counseling nearly tripled in the first quarter of 2009.
• The percentage of Housing Counseling clients seeking foreclosure avoidance services nearly doubled in the first quarter of 2009.
• The housing problem is not going away. The total caseload for Trident United Way's Housing Counseling increased 20% in the second quarter of 2009 from already-high levels.
