Health Impact Agenda

Trident United Way has conducted a series of focus groups with teens, parents, and community leaders in Charleston County on the issues of health in their communities. The purpose is to gather information on health care in some of our communities and create a Health Impact Agenda to guide community action.

Teens and Parents
The purpose of these focus groups was to hear from community residents (teenagers and parents) about their perception of a healthy community and concerns regarding healthcare, lifestyle practices, and prevention/promotion services within their communities. The discussion ended with both groups developed a list of solutions they felt would improve the health of their children, families, and community.

Community Leaders
Two focus groups were held with community leaders from downtown Charleston and N. Charleston. These discussions focused on major health concerns, potential barriers accessing services and engaging in healthy lifestyle practices, and the identification of service providers to meet the unaddressed health needs of each community. The community leader focus groups were conducted on the following date and place:

  • 15 community Leaders were invited from organizations such as Roper St. Francis, MUSC, Franklin C. Fetter, Urban League, YWCA, YMCA, Parks and Recreation, Mayor's Office, Shem Creek Primary Care, Stroke Belt Elimination, and the Charleston School District (school nurses). The word spread fast regarding this focus group and over 20 individuals showed up to share their concerns.

  • 16 community leaders are invited to attend this focus group including Weed and Seed, Parks and Recreation, Metanoia, Seacoast Dream Clinic, Harvest Free Clinic, Chicora, Tricountry Family Ministries, and Communities in Schools.

Strategic Planning consultant Joan Ustin facilitated these focus group discussions and is analyzing the common themes to be shared with the community. Trident United Way will produce a Health Impact Agenda that outlines systemic change, public policies, program strategies, and strategic initiatives.
