Health

Nearly two-thirds of our community is not at a healthy weight. Our community cannot achieve improved health and quality of life without adequate, equitable access to care and behavioral changes that begin early in life and lead to reduction in preventable chronic conditions. TUW coordinates a number of programs and initiatives designed to increase access to care and support early prevention of chronic disease.

Our Health Focus Areas

Trident United Way's community investments support agencies whose work advances us all towards achieving improved health and quality of life. Our investment focus areas are:

  • Access to Health Care

  • Prevention of Chronic Disease

  • AccessHealth Tricounty Network - is an initiative to establish an integrated community network of care for low-income uninsured residents of our three county area.

One hundred fifty thousand people in our three-county area – more than 20% of the population -- lack health insurance. These people are postponing routine and preventive care and bringing their acute needs to hospital emergency rooms. They are suffering unnecessarily and their care is costing health care providers and insured patients 35-40% of your health insurance premium by some estimates.

The AccessHealth coalition comprises local hospital systems, federally qualified health centers, free clinics, safety net providers, physicians, behavioral health agencies and other health care organizations, this unprecedented collaboration is focused on ensuring that uninsured patients get the right care at the right time in the right setting.

Health care coverage for children - Trident United Way engages and trains community partners who work to increase the number of eligible children enrolled in the Children's Health Insurance Program by using The Benefit Bank (TBB).  TBB is a web-based software tool that completes multiple applications for benefits (Medicaid, SNAP, FAFSA, EITC) in one in-take process. In Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties over 200 counselors have been trained and have currently established 30 sites in the Tricounty area.

The Benefit Bank identifies applicants who are eligible for Medicaid benefits thereby connecting them with needed health care services that save the tax payer money by reducing unnecessary emergency room visits and costly chronic health care treatment.
