Free Tax Help for Nearly Everyone

Free Tax Preparation for Families Earning Less Than $95,000

Charleston – Thousands of Lowcountry residents leave millions of dollars of tax credits unclaimed because they don’t file tax returns – or because they hire the wrong people to do it for them.

A coalition of groups led by Trident United Way, and including Charleston/Trident Urban League, AARP and The Benefit Bank of South Carolina, are now providing free tax filing help at 19 tri-county sites that will guide families towards the tax credits they have earned. Families earning less than $95,000 may be eligible for free tax preparation with The Benefit Bank.

Most notably, many low- and moderate-income families fail to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a federal work incentive worth up to $5,000. Free tax providers all make sure filers apply for EITC if they’re eligible.

Last year, Trident United Way and the Urban League helped 2,300 families file tax returns and claim nearly $3 million in credits. The average family got $1,300 back from the IRS. That money gets recycled back into our community.

Through these free tax preparation services, filing can be done electronically and refunds returned quickly. Free tax sites are at area libraries and other locations throughout the three counties, such as Trident United Way’s Prosperity Centers in Summerville and Moncks Corner. Income limits to qualify vary among the locations.
