Trident United Way is taking bold new steps to provide a framework for all of us to build a better community.  With their focus on education, financial stability and health, they are addressing the very building blocks for a good life. 

 

We know that without at least a high school education the opportunities are minimal for a job providing stable income to support a family or access to preventive health care. By funding programs in these areas and working collaboratively with other non-profits, businesses, government agencies and individuals to address these three key issues, Trident United Way is working to bring about lasting positive change in our community.

 

They also encourage us all to Live United by volunteering in the community and advocating for a stronger community.  While no single organization can solve these problems, together we can find solutions and change people’s lives.

There are far-reaching and persistent challenges facing the Lowcountry today.  Many of them come back to issues around education, financial stability and health.  

 

We know that the nearly 30% of our community that drops out of high school is without the skills to obtain a decent job, support a family or get access to health care. That’s why Trident United Way is focused first and foremost on helping prepare young children to succeed in school and ensure that they graduate high school. They’ve pumped more than $1 million into education programs measurably helping kids succeed.

 

Their innovative Links to Success initiative has helped between 83% of at-risk children in 11 low-performing schools improve their grades in the core disciplines of reading and math.

 

By supporting Trident United Way, you’re helping children raise themselves out of poverty and give themselves a chance at a happy and productive life.

Approximately 25% of Lowcountry residents have no health insurance, leading to delayed care, poorer health outcomes and unnecessarily high costs, costs that are passed on to the rest of us. It’s estimated that more than a third of your health insurance premium covers care for uninsured people.

 

As health insurance premiums continue to rise, more employers are likely to drop coverage, leaving even more people without insurance.  It’s a vicious cycle that affects all of us. 

 

That’s why Trident United Way has helped create an unprecedented collaborative among health care providers – including the four acute care hospital systems – to create a streamlined system of care for the uninsured. Called AccessHealth, it’s just getting underway with a $750,000 grant from The Duke Endowment. More financial investments will be needed to keep it running, and you can help.

Trident United Way is working to promote self-sufficiency in our community. For people to become self-sufficient, they need to meet their basic needs and then move to financial stability.

 

Your support of Trident United helps families get food, clothing and shelter, and then begin saving money and building financial assets. One way is through TUW’s collaboration with the Trident Urban League and the IRS, which helps hard-working people of modest incomes file their taxes and claim the tax credits for which they qualify.
